The UCLA Scientific Review is not a specialized academic journal. Rather, it is an interdisciplinary journal designed for accessibility by a broad scientific community. The style of the journal will be similar to that of Scientific American and the MIT Technology Review. For example, a particle physics review should be understandable to a cell biologist. Keep in mind that the target audience consists of primarily graduate science and engineering students with a strong background in fundamental science.

These are the types of articles we are looking for.

RESEARCH REVIEWS ::

Length: 4-8 double-spaced pages, 3000 words maximum
The Research Review focuses on the contributor's own research. Authors should strive to write in clear, concise English, and articles should be understandable to the nonspecialist. Contributors should not include results that they plan to publish elsewhere in the future as this will cause conflicts with peer-reviewed academic journals. Authors must obtain the permission of their principal investigators to publish in the UCLASR.

PROFILES ::

Faculty Interviews
Length: 4-6 double-spaced pages
The purpose of a profile is to showcase the talents and recent research of a UCLA faculty member, alumnus, or graduate student. Faculty members include professors, post-docs, and scientists. The interviewee should be performing cutting-edge research in their field and have recently received award(s) for his/her accomplishments to the scientific world. Only profiles of extraordinarily accomplished UCLA graduate students will be considered.

UCLA Events/Technology
Length: 4-6 double-spaced pages
Feature profiles on UCLA-related current events will be an in-depth contribution to the news section of the journal. Care should be taken to select topics that will generate interest and excitement among the readers. Topics may include:

  • New facilities (e.g., hospital)

  • New technology (e.g., supercomputer, analytical tool)

  • Timelines of progress on a particular project or development at UCLA

NEWS/POLICY ::

Length: 2 paragraphs to 2000 words
We are looking for features of varying length covering scientific news and policy issues. A novel approach should be taken when selecting and/or writing about the topic to stimulate the reader and avoid overlap with major news outlets. When considering timeliness, keep in mind the journal is a quarterly publication. We are open-minded, so if you have an unusual idea, run it by us with a proposal.

OPINION ::

Length: 500 words maximum
The topic of the opinion column should be of current interest relating to science and/or graduate education. A balanced and logical treatment of controversy is encouraged, and appropriate respect for opposing viewpoints should be observed. The introduction to the argument should be concise. Individual columns may be coupled with the opposing view to be presented as a "Point-Counterpoint" feature.

Submit a short proposal today. Submission information and deadlines.
